Do you see the benefits of doing community service? Why or why not?
I see the benefits of doing community service because it gives me the opportunity to see ways in which I personally can affect a person or a community. Doing acts of community service no matter the size of the act, is very rewarding to both the recipient(s) and yourself. By doing community service you one is able to learn from their community and improve the lives of others, which is very beneficial.
What institutional structures are in place at your site or in the community? How do they affect the people you work with?
The institutional structure at my site was my church. They affected the people we worked with because they were able to provide support and a location for the event, along with providing members to help the function go smoothly. Also, they talked to the people who came to the soup kitchen and were able to provide them with conversation, a meal, and some clothes and other items the people were in need of.
What did you do that seemed to be effective or ineffective in the community?
What seemed effective was we created take-home meals so we didn't have any leftovers and also the people who came were able to bring home another meal. So they liked that and it was effective in what to do with the rest of the food. What was ineffective was the manner of which we served food because it became very confusing to make sure you didn't skip anyone or give someone two.
What are the most difficult or satisfying parts of your work? Why?
The most difficult parts would be trying to do everything in the chaos of trying to serve everyone while people kept coming in and trying to figure out who needs to be served when it is very busy. The most satisfying part is when the people receiving the food would smile and thank you, and they would be truly gracious and happy for this one meal.
How are your values expressed through your community work?
My values are expressed through my community work by exemplifying my beliefs on service. I value service and helping my community in any way that is need and possible. Also, though my specific community work at Brookside, a soup kitchen, I think it is important that everyone is not hungry and has a meal each day, and through service I can pick the areas of which I value and serve in those areas.
